Since you seem to be shy about the details of what happened I'll give you some examples.

If you asked:

What kind of underwear do you have on?

How much money do you have in the bank?

Why is your face so ugly in your italki picture?

Have you ever cheated on your spouse?

Why is your country so stupid?

Why do you belong to such a terrible religion?

How come you are so dumb at learning my language?

or other questions like these...

Then, we have serious apologizing to do and I can teach you how to beg for forgiveness for saying truly stupid things because I can say some pretty stupid things and ask some pretty stupid questions so I have a lot of practice! :) You can write to me in private to tell me how bad it was and I'll try to think up some good groveling sentences for you in English.

However, if you asked questions about the persons experience or previous learning or ability with your language or what their goals are in learning your language.... then THEY owe YOU an apology. Americans can often be too forceful in asking for what they want not realizing that there are cultural differences and that they can be hurtful. You really don't owe him an apology at all. In our culture that would seem a bit silly. He might not even understand what you are apologizing for.

I hope that helps.

Vivian,

Why we need to read what questions you asked in order to help you is because apologies are cultural. Whether or not you should even apologize or he should apologize is the first question. The second question then will be how to apologize, but that will depend on what you did. Americans don't usually say simply, "I'm sorry" we will say what we are apologizing, why we are apologizing, how we will make it better etc.

There is no one thing that you can say in all circumstances. In order to make suggestions on what to say we need more details of what actually occured.
