Although I spend tons of time to study English. I still have some issues that I cannot really hang out with American friends comfortably.
I think you need to try to learn about the american culture and try to connect with it. I feel like this is a really big part of language learning. Its great to learn to speak a language, but it makes improvement so much easier if you're interested in the culture. For starters, if you learn about American sports (football, baseball, basketball), movies, TV shows, music, etc. All of these things can be great conversation starters and ways to create a connection with others.
