Julia, I face the similar predicament as yours but I have still resisted the temptation to join for the sake of facebook nerds! I have never opened an account on facebook. For me, email and skype are enough!

yeah, I was told facebook is blocked on China. However, I think you'll have no problem accessing it using a proxy.
