Attempt vs try

What's the difference between attempt and try?

They are not quite the same in meaning. With 'attempt', there is more of a suggestion that you won't succeed. 'Trying' to do something is positive, whereas 'attempting' implies a certain futility.

Correct! 'To attempt' is much more formal, which is why it's not used as much as 'to try'

But... attempt seems to be more formal, isn't it? At least, reading articles from newspaper sounds like that.
