I always wonder and never find the information... Can you help me?!
What should I put in such kinds of sentences as the next one after word THERE ( WAS or WERE):
There (was or were????!) a pen, a pencil and five books on the table.

Thank you, Mike, very much. I put "was" intuitively. My explanation was the same as yours))) but I have never found that in the grammar books)

make it match the first thing listed, so if you listed "five books" first then it would be "were"
