Points on profile

Ok, stupid question, bit what are the points for?  I am new here on italki, and I am just a bit confused.  Could someone please let me know what the points are for and what we do with them?  Thanks in advance.

No, it's not a stupid question. You'll see the word "BETA" next to the points, which means italki is just testing the feature to see how it works, then decide what to do with it.

At this stage, we don't do anything with the points. They only show how active a member has been on the site. By clicking on the points, you can see what the member has been doing in detail (eg. answering questions, starting discussions and so on).

Of course, we don't want a system where people use italki only to score points. I've seen it on other sites, and it gets out of hand quickly - members start abusing the system just to gain an extra point. For example, on another language site I saw people copy-and-paste texts (and steal other members' answers and corrections) just to make it look like they are correcting and answering texts and questions. Sadly, the admins on that other site didn't care either.

If someone has a good and fair suggestion for using the points, then I'm sure italki will be very interested! :)

It's an experimental feature to get people to help out others.

You get X, Y, and Z number of points for doing things like correcting entries, etc.

Right now there is no *tangible* benefit to doing so but the site developers may give you credits to use in the future to buy lessons. Well, that's what I would do if I were in their place. haha.

But if you correct entries then others will help you out. :)

Welcome to italki Ameeka. I am new and there is much that is confusing here. They will not let you give your email for example. I would be careful about giving out much persoanl information and especially contact details. The language panel is to show your levels of knowledge. I did learn some Swedish and would quite like to learn more.

Could someone also explain what the percentage that appears next to your name means? The more questions / discussions you respond to, the lower it gets! Very confusing, or am I missing something too??

Thanks

Peter

You need to put down the languages you want to learn.
