Ali it all depends what you want to do in life.IF you never intend to expand your knowledge of the world, stay in your own country, never communicate with people from other places,or read about anything not published in your own language,of course you can manage with one language. However, there is a lot of research that shows that people who learn more than one language are happier, enjoy life more, expand their world and improve their brain. There is a lot of information on this website about it and on other websites. Many italki members have explained why they like to learn another language. But if you are happy it's up to you what you do.I personally feel sorry for people who only know one language and I very much enjoy learning another language- it teaches you a new way to think.

For me, it's a matter of opening doors. Every language you learn opens another door to an entire world of things, people, experiences... That's what makes a language so special. It's like a bridge from one person to another. :)

I suppose if you're going to stay in your own country all your life (who can forsee the future, though?) or if you speak English, you don't need a new language every day. BUT I do believe that you're missing out.

Everyone meets people who speak a different language at some point. And I don't know, but for me, one of the best things someone can do for me is to talk to me in MY language, even if it's just a stuttered word or two. :) I think it's a sign of respect and valueing the other person and their culture.

I did learn a little bit of German before I had visited some of my relatives in Germany.  When I was in Germany, I found that my relatives there could speak English far better than I could speak German.  I think since English is used almost everywhere, then it's not necessary for native-English speakers to learn another language.  Perhaps English then should be the one and only universal language for mankind.  If English isn't somebody's native-language, then it will be necessary for him to learn English as second language.

Then why did you start learning a second one? xD
