It's like anything else, if you are doing it without thinking, without wanting or needing the "thing" then it's something you are doing for other reasons.  For instance, when you eat food or drink alcohol and you are not hungry, it's not a meal or it's an appropriate time for/amount of liquor, then you're going to regret it.  Too many people do things out of habit or without thinking & it leads to self loathing or other negative things.  Spending without thinking leads to poverty & ownership of a bunch of crap you don't need.  Eating without thinking leads to obesity & drinking without thinking leads to a ton of negative issues.

The best way to beat this is to be mindful of what you are doing & ensure that you are doing something that you want or need to do & that you are not doing it out of boredom or to make yourself "happy".  I put that in brackets because none of the habits I've described lead to real happiness.  If your happiness comes out of the box of a new purchase you are doomed to be unhappy.  I've seen people buy things for this reason, come home with their new purchase & just toss it in the corner.  They don't even open the bag/box.  The happiness they received came from making the decision to purchase & once that was done, the item game them no pleasure.

Better to be mindful of what gives you real happiness & focus on that.  Mindless spending/eating/drinking is an indication of other issues.

Cut up your credit cards and stay away from shopping malls.

Of course when I said "brackets" I meant "quotes".

Don't use your credit cards! Instead, set aside money from every paycheck to spend, and you can only spend that! That way you can still impulse shop, but you don't have to go overboard because there is a set limit.
