If you begin to study Russian, why did you do that?

I'm a native Russian speaker and I want to know, why does the Russian language excite curiosity? Why did you decide to study that? Have you ever been in Russia or have you learnt about the history or the culture of this country? If you study the language, do you read books? Who is your favourite Russian writer?
