Best techniques for memorizing new vocabulary?

What are your best tricks for memorizing new vocabulary in the language(s) you're studying?

One of my techniques for memorizing expressions ( idioms especially) is by drawing them. This helps me associate the image with the expression and remember it more easily. Also, you can find a lot of drawings or photos online for expressions. They can be really helpful!

Like Michael, I have gotten a  lot of use out of programs like Anki lately.

I read articles, comics, and books and when I run across a word that I don't know, I write it down in a text file on Google Docs. When I have a lengthy list of words to memorize, I upload the file to Memrise (https://www.memrise.com/) so that I can practice the vocabulary on my smart phone. It is a flashcard type of program like Anki, I just prefer it because I think that the user interface is better designed for smart phones (and it is free).

Anki is awesome for memorising vocabulary and sentences.  I use it to help me learn Spanish.  It's a flashcard application or programme (smartphone or computer) that uses spaced repetition software to make you review vocab just as you are naturally about to forget it.  It's a super efficient way to study because you don't waste time reviewing vocab you already definitely know (you would often review cards you know well with physical flashcards due to shuffling etc.).  You don't even have to make the cards yourself.  There are shared decks online that you can download for free.  I studies the flashcards on my phone when on the subway or while queuing up places. Turns my travel time for work into study time.  Can't recommend it enough!

Check out anikweb.net (I think) for the software.  Only problem is it's an expensive app on iTunes (but free on Android).

I make flashcards with the words, and learn 5 a day, one side the target language, the other side my native language.

After learning anywhere from ten to twenty new vocabulary words, terms, and/ or phrases, I write the word 5 x's each along with the meaning and then I write a two or three sentences for each word, term, and/ or phrase. Takes a bit of time, but once finsihed, the newly acquired vocabulary is quite easy to reference.
