What is Rhinotillexomania? Generally, the habit of introducing your finger into your nose is called nose-picking, but when it becomes a body-focused repetitive behavior it is known as Rhinotillexomania. Most cases it has to do with an OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), although it's not too common among people. According to a study carried out few years ago in Wisconsin (USA), this sort of disorder only affects one percent of the population, who ends by hurting its nasal mucosa. The rest of individuals does it too. Researchers showed that over ninety percent of survey respondents affirmed they used to pick their nose once in a while, at their offices or in the car, because there were less people. A following study done in United Kingdom, suggested that at least a third of the people got used to picking their nose about five times a day. But the main question is if this practice is good or bad for our health. Dr Friedrich Bischinge, specialist on lung health, says that fingers are better than napkins because they keep the nose cleaner. Another Dutch research directed by the microbiologist Heiman Wertheim, indicates that while picking our nose, a bacteria called Staphylococcurs aureus gets into the nasal cavity, making us carriers of it. The worst is that this microbe causes from superficial illness on the skin to serious diseases like meningitis, pneumonia, food poisoning, septic shock and autoimmune disorders. Thank you :)

Well Bianca, that's another word I'll never see on a scrabble board!

There is sometimes a curiosity about what has collected in the nose...

I suspect that items called "Nose hair trimmers" are probably not good because the hairs are what catch the particles.

Probably not a subject to talk about at the dinner table.

*Better: Most people do, in fact, pick their nose.

**I'm not sure if this gets capitalized :/  However, I think if you do capitalize this term, both words must be capitalized.

Thank you for this interesting entry!  A very difficult topic- good job Bianca!
