My name is Ninel. It is a very rare name. Usually, if someone hears it for the first time, they think it's a French name like "Shanelle". But they are wrong; this name has nothing to do with French. It is a communist one. My grandmother was an active communist and she's also Ukrainian. Therefore, when my Dad was shocked by the premature birth of his daughter, he had no idea how to name his first born child. My grandmother immediately helped him by giving him a name which was close to hers, which is Ninel (My grandmother's name was Nina). My Dad said to my Mom "I've got a wonderful name for our daughter. Read Lenin backwards " My mom did not realize right away what he meant, but after thinking it over for a short time, she was a little bit shocked at the idea that he had offered. Even though she was a little surprised, she agreed with it quickly. So, everybody calls me Ninel, but sometimes, people do not know the story why. My very close friends use it with a diminutive-hypocoristic suffix "Ninelchonok". In the past, I hated my name because I am Asian, and it takes too long to explain to people who are surprised that my parent gave me a Russian name. Now, I am ready to tell the story to them.
