Hey, can someone correct this please? I can also correct some of your german exercises if you have some :) Raising your hand in a lesson All students that visit a school know that they have to raise their hand and contribute correct information to a lesson. If they do that frequent they get good oral marks. However I see that many of my classmates, the girls regrettably in particular, do not raise their hands although the know the answer. They are afraid of speaking in class. Many of my friends are clever and know many answers but they do not dare to speak in class When we do group tasks and talk about the questions they come up with brilliant ideas but later in plenum they keep quite. I often raise my hand and feel sometimes bad because I use an idea that was my friends'. I understand that they are shy and I fell a bit sorry for them. On the other hand, they are very good in the class tests. Thats nice for them but some teachers then decide to link the oral mark to the class test marks. Thats something that makes me angry. If someone is very shy and raises their hand one time per semester then that person just do not deserve the 1,0 as an oral mark, even if the person got the 1+ in the class test. In my opinion you only deserve the best oral mark when you overcome the fear of speaking out in class. I talk when I know the answer but that does not mean that I am fearless. I also worry that someone thinks I am stupid when I say the wrong answer. I also think that others laugh when I ask things they already understood. Nevertheless I say something and I am rather right than wrong. Maybe it is because I get jealous easily, but I get angry if someone who barely talks in lessons gets an 1,0 as an oral mark just because they did so well in the class tests. Of course I am happy for that person but on the other hand I do not think that it is fair.

Hey, can someone correct this please? I can also correct some of your german exercises if you have some :) Raising your hand in a lesson All students that attend school know that they have to raise their hand and contribute (whether their anwer needs to be 'correct' is a different question) to a lesson. If they do that frequently they get good oral marks. However I see that many of my classmates, regrettably the girls in particular, do not raise their hands although the know the answer. (This is opposite to China where the girls are generally the best!) They are afraid of speaking in class. Many of my friends are clever and know many answers but they do not dare to speak in class When we do group tasks and talk about the questions they come up with brilliant ideas but later in plenum they keep quiet. I often raise my hand and sometimes feel bad because I use an idea that was my friends'. I understand that they are shy and I feel a bit sorry for them. On the other hand, they are very good in the class tests. Thats nice for them but some teachers then decide to link the oral mark to the class test marks. That's something that makes me angry. If someone is very shy and raises their hand only once per semester then that person just does not deserve the 1,0 as an oral mark, even if the person got the 1+ in the class test. In my opinion you only deserve the top oral mark when you overcome the fear of speaking out in class. I talk when I know the answer but that does not mean that I am fearless. I also worry that someone thinks I am stupid when I give the wrong answer. I also think that others laugh when I ask things they already understand. Nevertheless, I say something and hope I am right rather than wrong. Maybe it is because I get jealous easily, but I get angry if someone who barely talks in lessons gets an 1,0 as an oral mark just because they did so well in the class tests. Of course I am happy for that person but on the other hand I do not think that it is fair.
Well done. Plenum is an unusual word, very academic. I don't know your marking system. I guess your 1,0 means 100% or 10/10? You raise a very good point. Let me explain my approach. Firstly, in an oral English class I try to avoid saying there are 'wrong' answers. The main point is to get people to speak. In my first class I normally explain that wrong answers are better than no answers, we learn from mistakes. When you are talking in groups, does your teacher come around 'monitoring' what is happening? If so they might give credit for what people are saying then, as well as in front of the whole class. I don't know how big your class is or how many times you see your teacher, but it is difficult and time consuming to keep marks of everything. You can end up with massive spreadsheets which might only change a mark by one or two percent. A total waste of time. So linking the oral mark to the general class mark might not be 'fair' but it is way more efficient. My students always have an end of term oral test, so the better speakers get higher marks then. And of course there is the question of whether there is any point in giving marks. Personally I feel that people achieve whatever level of language they achieve. They can either do it or not. Is there any point in giving a mark? I know that there is maybe no way around it but it seems a lot of unnecessary time and stress to me! Anyway, good luck!
