Daily writing practice 20/10/20 For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to
write a short essay on the topic of Should Attention Be Given to the Study of
Chinese. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below:
1.近年来在学生中出现了忽视中文学习的现象 2.出现这种现象的原因和后果;3.我认为… With China’s reform and opening up,
intercultural communication between China and western countries is becoming
more frequent than before (or 'becoming increasingly frequent', but both together sounds odd). A good command of at least one other
language, especially English, is essential for Chinese students. As a result,
recent years have seen countless Chinese students paying close attention to
learning foreign languages while neglecting the study of their mother tongue.
From my perspective, apart from the great emphasis put on studying a foreign
language, another reason for Chinese students not enthusiastic for learning
Chinese is that the current Chinese curriculum is much too boring for
most Chinese students. For instance, my high school classmates often complained
to me about studying the sounds and meanings of very uncommon words which are
hardly ever used in our daily life, but we have to spend days working on them,
because they account for 15 percent of our marks in an exam! In my opinion, these students are fed up of reading the works of ancient Chinese philosophers and thinkers
before the 20th century, and thus know less and less about the values and
struggles, the joys and sorrows of great people, which is what made the
nation survive till now and become the second largest economy in the world.
Therefore, I think we should change the current curriculum and let students put
more effort into appreciating the rich cultural heritage of novels, dramas, and
even films in the Chinese language. In addition, preparing students for their future by developing
skills of making presentations in Chinese can also stimulate pupils to study
harder.
