what is the difference between walk along and walk on in english language? Does along mean parallel to something ing english language?

Walk along = can mean either walking around, nearby, or directly on Example = Walk along the coast, which means you can walk by it, around it, or on the coast. Walk on = walking directly on Example = I walk on the sidewalk, directly on it.
