Past continuous: "I was walking in the park yesterday." Past perfect continuous: "I had been walking in the park for an hour when I got a phone call from my friend." The past continuous shows an activity taking place at a specific time ("yesterday"). The past perfect continuous shows what was happening before something else happened (both events are in the past).
