What does it mean? 'If I were in your shoes...' I looked it up in my dictionary but still the meaning is not clear. Maybe because the examples provided are not clear. I also want to know whether the expression is used by natives in their everyday life or it is just a formal expression that could be used only in writing. Thank you in advance!

It's the same as "si j'étais à ta place..."

It’s very common expression, we using it a lot. Other meaning to it If I were in your position/ situation. It can be used when you want to tell someone what you would do in their situation . If I were in your shoes, I think I'd write to her rather than try to explain over the phone.
