What is this number- or amount-tracking method called?
In some cultures, when people need to keep a record of how many has been counted, they draw four short lines from left to right, meaning one to four, and for the number of five they draw a long line across the previous 4 lines. The same procedure goes on and on for the following greater numbers. I'm wondering what this number- or amount-tracking method is called in English.
(Here's some trivia for those who happen to be Manderin learners: In our culture, we use the character of 正, which means "correct" or "to rectify". It is done in five strokes and easy to write and the action of using it as a number- or amount-tracking method is called 畫正字.)
