Is it correct?

Is there( a sports )club with a swimming pool near your house ?

My teacher says It's ok to use article "a" althought the word after it is " sports " = plural ... I didn't undestand it ?

for me I would say sports without a / or a without "s" in sports .
So what is right and why !

sports here is not a noun 
it's an adjective  like : sports car ,..
 so , sports is not plural because it's an adjective 
and we say a sports car , a sports club , so on ..
