Are 'on' and 'onto' interchangeable in this sentence? A crown is placed on/onto her head as part of a ceremony.

I have a feeling this question will get different answers from different people, but I am going to say no, saying onto here just sounds too weird!

Both 'on' and 'onto' are prepositions denoting a location in space, however in this case 'onto' is grammatically correct since the latter shows movement to a position on something, in this case the crown is moved from one place to the head of the person. I hope this helps.
