I feel confused about the meaning of the sentence. Please help me. Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitablility...and without hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the forces that would have society remain without needed change. Please explain the meaning of the sentence. What does "an ally of forces" mean in the sentence.

Without hard work and change, our society wouldn't develop. Here, the 'forces' are anything which prevents society developing. To be an 'ally' is to be a friend of. So time is an ally of the forces. This is because as time passes, if a society doesn't develop, it can fall behind in the same way as a lack of effort in development.
