What is "by whom we would rather be liked than not"? Hello, Please help me understand the following sentence. In particular, what is "by whom we would rather be liked than not"? "Most of us are just drifting, composites of others we don't particularly admire but by whom we would rather be liked than not".

"Most of us do not have a definite direction in life. Instead, our personalities are influenced by people that we don't really like. But even though we don't like them, we want them to like us." Another way to use "by whom": Darrel met Hannah, by whom he wanted to be loved. Darrel wanted Hannah to love him. Mike wasn't expecting Peter by whom he was met at the train station. Peter met Mike at the train station.

(A) we would prefer that other people dislike us (B) The writer is saying that he wants A and not B.
