What is the meaning of "by extension" before the meaning of a word? Noun: Hole in one (by extension, idiomatic) Any rare, wonderful, or remarkable accomplishment. Thank you in advance!

by extension here means that the expression is a figure of speech. This is because "hole in one" refers to that moment in golf when your first try lands the golf ball directly into the hole. So when you you achieve a 100% score on a difficult test you can say that "it was a hole in one".
