What is the difference between "old chum" and "old mate"?

Chum and mate are alternatives to 'friend'. They all mean more or less the same thing, Marina.

Yes, pretty much the same thing (friend), however an Aussie would not normally use "chum" in place of "mate". We even have our own special definition for "old mate". Sooo.. we're getting into regional differences here. :)
