Respectfully I have to disagree with Lizy's answer. Sometimes it might mean "don't take me seriously", like "I'm just joking".  But it really means "I'm speaking figuratively" (as opposed to "I'm speaking literally"). In other words, "I'm using a metaphor, or simile, or poetic language, etc."

"Don't take me seriously." You would say this when in jest or joking with someone.
