Can't get the joke
I read the joke on Reader's Digest as below
It’s often a challenge to explain to strangers exactly what I do in the aerospace industry. At one gathering, I didn’t even try. I just said, "I’m a defense contractor."
One of the guys was intrigued. "So, what do you put up mainly? Chain-link?"

What does put up chain-link mean?

The closest I can come up with is that when he said "Im a defense contractor" the person didnt hear him right, and thought he said he was a fence contractor.
To "put up a fence" means to install a fence, and chain-link is a type of fence. So he was asking him if he installs chain link fences.
Don't worry though, its not a very funny joke :)
