I feel there are three reasons why people perceive Chinese as difficult: unfamiliar writing system, dialectal variation, and the phonemes and tone system.

Well, what makes learning another language, any language, so hard for English speakers? My dad was pretty good with languages but he almost failed his Chinese class because he was tone-deaf. For other people, perhaps lack of exposure to any good language models or feeling overwhelmed by the writing system.

Laziness, or stupidity, or both. It's not hard at all. Just do it!
