'a total of' or 'in total'? There were a total of 40 people there. There were 40 people in total there. Which of the above sentence is common? How about the following two sentences? A total of 40 people went there. 40 people in total went there.

There WAS a total of 40 people. Yes, both sentences are fine. Both are quite common, as far as I know.
