The sentence means to show the intensity of "dark" element in the comedy. There is comdesy by a very dark comedy. So dark that it seems to be etced with acid and drawn with pitch. An acid eats into everything and etching (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etching) a metal with acid shows the intensity of it. Pitch is black, and drawn with pitch is another way to show how dark it is. This is an often used style in writing that uses some really intense and strong metaphors to further intensify our communication.
