Well, yes there is a slight mistrust of QQ amongst westerners. I can't verify the accuracy of these links, but they're worth a read anyway. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tencent_QQ#Controversies_and_criticisms http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/08/world/asia/08censor.html?_r=3&pagewanted=2&ref=technology (The comment about QQ "spyware" is about halfway down the page.)

The question is most Chinese are not aware of this. In order to socialize with them online, I sometimes have to install this software, but I'm not sure if the version for international users, QQ International, is safer, so I'd like to hear the opinions of westerners'.

QQ International is a piece of instant message software released by Tencent. It's the most famous software in China and one of the most infamous around the world because it's reported to scan user's personal data secretly and transmit it to Tencent, which sells the information and earns profits.

I did not get your question sorry. Would you clarify a bit ?

I'm not sure if I get what you mean. QQ International is an official product of Tencent, so it's not an overt scam. Some people are wary of QQ in general. But I would say that QQ International is not any more sketchy than regular QQ and certainly not spyware.
