Can anyone please help me with the following paragraph? Thank you! There is a paragraph that has confused me for a few days. It goes: If … society is taken to be an organized set of individuals with a given way of life, culture is that way of life. If society is taken to be an aggregate of social relations, then culture is the content of those relations. Society emphasizes the human component, the aggregate of people and the relations between them. Culture emphasizes the component of accumulated resources, immaterial as well as material, which the people inherit, employ, transmute, add to, and transmit. 1. Could you please tell me what "society is taken to be an organized set of individuals with a given way of life, culture is that way of life."? Does it mean when people are gathering together to form a society, and they have their way to live inside the society. Culture is the way how they live in the society? 2. Does the sentence "If society is taken to be an aggregate of social relations, then culture is the content of those relations." mean that a society is formed by the relations among people, and culture is the relations? 3. Does "Society emphasizes the human component, the aggregate of people and the relations between them. Culture emphasizes the component of accumulated resources, immaterial as well as material, which the people inherit, employ, transmute, add to, and transmit." means a society is formed by a lot of people and their relations. Culture is the resources that people can have from the society? I actually don't understand the part of "component of accumulated resources, immaterial as well as material". 4. what does "add to" mean? Why do we need a to here in the sentence of "......, which the people inherit, employ, transmute, add to, and transmit"? Thank you for your help! <3 Resource of the article: Firth 1951, p. 27

1. If society is a group of people organized together that live in a certain way, then the way that they live is called culture. 2. If society is taken to be a collection of different relations between people, then culture is the meaning and feeling of belonging that those relations give to the people in that society. 3. Of all of a society's resources, that part of those resources, both material and immaterial, that the people inherit, employ, transmute, add to, and transmit, is what culture emphasizes. 4. People may add to literature, either written or oral, from generation to generation. They may add to buildings, roads and laws. There are a number of resources in a society that the people in it can add to (or, at times, subtract from). This is my guess.
