When I have a fever, at first I take some medicine to relieve the symptoms, for example paracetamol or a herbal medicine like Fha Thalai Jone (Thai name). Then, if the symptoms persist, I go to see a doctor either at a clinic or a hospital.
Your original version was fine, but this is a more English way of saying it. The symptoms belong to the disease, not to you. And we like the phrase "If symptoms persist" in English!
