what does that " detail" mean?
In the confusion none of the officers noticed the arrival of the White House flag detail. When the last crackpot had been whisked away, they found the President’s flag and seal miraculously in place on the podium; the base band was playing “The Man I Love,” and the man himself was emerging from his Lincoln.

I beg to differ with Mr. Simon. The "detail" in this context refers to the group of people to whom the task of handling the flag is entrusted. They are required to usher the flag ceremony. Their activities include folding,carrying,unfolding,hoisting and lowering the flag ( depending on the circumstance) with proper decorum.

In this context "detail" means simply the design, colours, shape and textures that compose the white house flag.
