Which one would be proper? I'll make up for my .................. with hard work. lacks, defects, deficiencies, inadequacies, or what would you say?

1) shortcomings 2) deficiencies - both of these words hint at the type of failing which can be corrected with hard work I think that "lacks" is a verb, not a noun. "Defects" and "inadequacies" hint of something which can not be corrected simply by effort or hard work. A physical handicap or learning disability might be a "defect". "Inadequate" implies that the person is not and can not be made suitable for the task, so we need to find someone else.
