I think that "lacks" is a verb, not a noun.
"Defects" and "inadequacies" hint of something which can not be corrected simply by effort or hard work. A physical handicap or learning disability might be a "defect". "Inadequate" implies that the person is not and can not be made suitable for the task, so we need to find someone else.
