They are both correct, I think, but #1 is much better, stronger and clearer: I want to be the first person to do something like this. Think about these sentences: "Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic." This sentence suggests (to most English speakers) that Charles Lindbergh was the very first person in history to fly solo across the Atlantic. "Charles Lindbergh was the first person flying solo across the Atlantic." This sentence is not as clear, and could imply, depending on the context and the reader, that someone named Charles Lindbergh was the first person flying solo across the Atlantic in a race of some kind.
