I picked him up off his sorry and unemployed ass
A woman was complaining about his ungrateful ex-boyfriend who dumped her for a young girl. And going through all the old things about how her helped him out of his bad situations.
woman:"Anyway, I pick him up off his sorry and unemployed ass, I gave him hair plugs, contact lenses, teeth."
I can't understand this sentence,"I pick him up off his sorry and unemployed ass","pick him up" does that mean "begin to have a relationship with him" or "get him back on his feet" or something else. And "off his ass"? I really can't get the picture.

When someone is "down", you pick them up.
down = down in life, as in no job, no future, no nothing.
So, this woman pick him up of his sorry, unemployed ass.
sorry, unemployed ass = standard expression for someone who is not working
