be swallowed by the darkness&be engulfed by the darkness If I change 'was swallowed by' in "I watched her walk down the road until she was swallowed by the darkness." to 'was engulfed by' as in "I watched her walk down the road until she was engulfed by the darkness.", does the sentence still exactly mean the same? If not, is there some difference?

I could use both 'swallowed' and 'engulfed' by darkness when talking about somebody or something I was looking at. If I was talking about myself or the group that I was with, I would use 'engulfed'.
