Does 'feel squeezed' mean 'under stress' in this case? "Certainly, they have felt squeezed and obliged to deal with other matters." Does the above sentence essentially mean the same as 'Certainly, they were under stress and obliged to deal with other matters.'?

In a way yes, but it is a very particular type of stress. A better synonym would be 'pressure'. if someone were squeezed into doing something, it means they were forced into doing something.
