'Soul' refers to soul music. Soul music is a particular type of music that takes influence from American gospel (religious) music and 'rhythm and blues', a type of popular music. It started in the 1950's and was done mostly by African-American artists. Ray Charles was considered one of the all-time greats in this type of music, as well as the music world in general.
