About article When I have read my student book I have noticed that in the sentence "But behind them is a place where life hasn't changed for over 100 years - THE canals." i have to use "the". If somebody can help me with it, I will be happy. If canals is plural, why should I use "THE"? Thanks a lot.

You use the definite article with any noun, singular or plural, when you know to what you are referring. "The town has canals. The canals cover the whole town." I used 'the' in the second sentence because the first sentence tells us which canals we are talking about. It would have been the same rule for one canal.
