The word, "institutionalized", is normally used when referring to having committed a person to an institution for those who are mentally ill or unstable; usually against their will. "My aunt was institutionalized after she tried to commit suicide." In other words, she was placed in a psychiatric hospital. However, it can be used in other circumstances. Marriage is sometimes considered "an institution", so a person could say that those who are married have been institutionalized. It can also be used to describe the character of someone or something. In the movie, The Shawshank Redemption, this word is used to describe prisoners who have been in prison so long that they cannot function well outside of the prison institution. "In some cultures, socialized medicine has become an institutionalized part of their society."
