Which one is correct?
I (was wondering/ wondered) what he was looking at.

"was wondering" is true and it is past continuous. It means what you were "doing". But it can't be "was wondered" if you use a v2 you don't use was/were . You put the v2 after subject. And it means what you "did".

They both are correct. 'was wondering' is past continous tense while 'wondered' is simple past. It depends on what you want to say.
