“As the two teams were equal at the end of the game, ..." “As the two teams were equal at the end of the game, they had to play again to decide the winners of the competition.” Note: Is the sentence correct? Can we say “the two teams are equal” to mean their scores are equal?

It makes sense, but we wouldn't use it. We would say "tied" "As the two teams were tied at the end of the game, they had to play again to decide the winners of the competition." or: "Because the game ended in a tie, they had to play again (or: continue playing) to decide the winner."
