How can I make this particular sentence natural? *Note: I came up with it and didn't come from any paragraph. The knowledge that the director once shown was superficial. *I am trying to say that the knowledge that the director showed looks like it has profound thought, but when you think deeper you find out it's the exact opposite.

At first sight the director's knowledge looked deep, but on closer inspection it turned out to be quite superficial. .... or 'but in fact it was quite superficial'
