instead "deadly" can I say "dead"

Agree with Kathleen. You can't *logically* use "dead" in the sentence, because if you say "dead power" then the weapon is ineffective. It means that the power is dead, ineffectual, not working, non-functioning. "Deadly power," however, means that the power is capable of *causing* death.

No, "dead" wouldnt be correct. The sentence you have is ok, although you could change it to "The idea of a thin beam of light imbued with deadly power came much earlier."
