Cuando hablas de una persona, se usa "es", para sus características permanentes. Ejemplo: "Ella es adulta", "El es extranjero". "Está" se usa para cualquier estado transitorio. "Ella está cansada", "El está enojado". Cuando hablas de acciones concretas o verbos, "to be" se traduce como "estar". She is working. ( Ella está trabajando ) He is studying ( El está estudiando ).

Ser is used when you can ask How is something or someone, eg. How is she? ¿Cómo es ella? Ella es morena. Ella es española. Ella es Ana. Es una buena idea. Es viernes. Estar is used when you can ask Where or you explain a situation. eg. Where is your brother? ¿Dónde está tu hermano? Mi hermano está en Madrid. No voy a clase porque estoy enferma. ¿Dónde estás? Estoy en mi casa. More complicated is the use with adjetives or colours, eg. grey, gris. El cielo está gris The sky is grey (it is a temporary situation because only happen today) Mi coche es gris My car is grey (it is a usual situation because is the colour of my car) I hope this explanantion will be correct for you.

First, if "esta" is wrong typed, because you're talking about the verb "to be" in spanish, (estar), and conjugated it'd be "está" in this case. "esta" means "this", as you can see it's a really different word, but don't worry, it's not a serious mistake :) "ser" is used to describe things. For example: *Yo soy Cristan *Mi trabajo es horrible "estar" is used to talk about actions and moods. For example: *Ellos están jugando al futbol *En este momento estoy triste I hope I'd helped you!
