what does "out of" stand for? Does "the hitchhiker seemed to appear right out of the darkness" means that the hitchhiker appear from the darkness or away from it?

At first he was in the darkness and you could not see him. Then he came "out of" the darkness and "into the light" so you could see him.

If I read this sentence in a novel, I would interpret it as meaning that the hitchhiker seemed to magically appear, mystically, conjured. It does mean From the darkness.
