How would you explain the word “black” in the context? But he further adds that, by means of the Waltham Hacks, or, to use his own expression, as soon as they began blacking, they were reduced to about fifty head, and so continued decreasing till the time of the late Duke of Cumberland. How would you explain the word “black” in “as soon as they began blacking”? PS: this extract is taken from The Natural History of Selborne. Thanks!

I think it means turning black. There's not much context. It sounds as if the passage is about some type of livestock and when they began to turn black, the farmer reduced the number of animals.
