How would you explain this sentence in the context? Mr. P. T. Cash is to come on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Mother could put a sign on her door like the bakery shop downstairs. How would you explain the second sentence: Mother could put a sign on her? PS: the Mother was Mr. P. T. Cash’s mistress.

With only this much context I think it means a busy or closed sign, Sometimes shops put a sign "Back in 10 minutes" or something if the shopkeeper has to go somewhere and close the shop briefly. If Mother's "friend" is coming the narrator is joking she could put a sign on her door to say she was 'busy' during the time he was there ....
