I think the word should be "breathing" -- the process of taking air into the lungs, and then expel it. (expel - force out) The sentence means: I didn't think she would suddenly stop breathing, but in order to make sure she hadn't stopped breathing, I touched on her back between her shoulder blades with my hand. The shoulder blades are the two relatively flat bones on the upper back.
